Security not just about guns, but society too: Raman Suri

Jammu, November 13: In the wake of the recent car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, which claimed at least 13 lives and left more than 20 people injured, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Executive Member Raman Suri today expressed deep concern over the emerging reports linking the incident to individuals from Anantnag’s medical fraternity. He said this shocking revelation underscores an urgent need to re-examine the security structure in Jammu and Kashmir, not merely from a military or policing perspective, but also through social and civic lenses.

“Security in today’s times cannot be limited to guns and barricades — it must also include social awareness, accountability, and civic vigilance,” Suri said. Praising the swift and coordinated action of security agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Delhi Police and central investigation teams, which managed to trace leads and arrest suspects within hours of the explosion, Suri said the promptness reflects India’s enhanced operational capabilities. However, he cautioned that the presence of medical and educated individuals in such terror networks is an alarming trend that calls for deep-rooted social introspection.

Suri emphasized that while J&K has witnessed immense progress in peace and development, certain lapses at the community level pose avoidable risks. He pointed out that in Jammu city, many food carts and mobile eateries are being run by individuals from outside states without obtaining proper licenses from the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), a serious regulatory gap that demands immediate attention. He further stated that many landlords fail to properly verify their tenants, treating police verification casually. “This casual approach weakens the first line of local defence. Landlords and business owners must be made accountable and law-enforcement agencies should strictly monitor this process,” he urged.

Calling for a social security audit of Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP leader suggested mandatory licensing and inspection of all food carts, roadside vendors, and informal businesses, strict enforcement of tenant and workers’ verification by landlords and owners of business establishments, community awareness drives to encourage public vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities, Scrutiny of white-collar professionals involved in questionable networks or financial links to radical activities.

“The Delhi blast has caused irreparable loss of lives and exposed gaps that extend beyond one city or state. J&K must learn from this tragedy and strengthen its social security mechanisms to ensure that such elements are identified and isolated before they can cause harm,” Suri asserted. He added that development and public safety are inseparable, and urged citizens, local bodies, and law-enforcement agencies to work in unison. “Our vision of a peaceful and prosperous Jammu & Kashmir depends on a vigilant society that refuses to give shelter, physical or ideological, to those who wish to destabilize peace,” he said.

Expressing condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the Delhi blast, Suri said, “We stand united against all forces that seek to divide and destroy. Together, we must ensure that Jammu and Kashmir remains a symbol of resilience, safety, and harmony.”
