Sgr-Jmu NH reopens partially after 8 days | | | Ramban , Sep 10: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was partially restored on Wednesday morning after days of disruption, bringing relief to the stranded commuters and easing shortages of essential commodities, including vegetables and fruits, in local markets.
Officials said Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) were allowed first, followed by trucks carrying essential commodities in the afternoon. However, the traffic movement remained slow as only a single-lane temporary stretch had been made traffic-worthy. Several vehicles got stuck in mud and slush at Tharad and had to be pushed out with the help of JCB machines.
“We are clearing stranded traffic on a rotational basis and prioritising trucks carrying essential supplies towards Srinagar,” an official said.
Road restoration work is still in progress, and traffic is being regulated on a one-way basis at both Tharad and Udhampur.
On Tuesday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, accompanied by the Regional Officer of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, inspected the damaged stretch and directed officials to expedite the restoration process.
Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Ramban, Raja Adil Hamid, said Project Director NHAI, Subham Yadoo, was monitoring road restoration work at Tharad, Udhampur.
The highway was partially restored for stranded traffic after remaining blocked for eight consecutive days.
However, vehicle operators complained that they were facing difficulties in crossing the damaged road stretch at Tharad due to mud and slush.
Officials said road restoration work was going on at Tharad.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur, Amod Ashok Nagpure, said that passenger vehicles and heavy vehicles carrying essential supplies were being allowed to cross the Tharad area on a rotational basis.
The road restoration work and traffic regulation are simultaneously going on at Tharad.
“The road was restored temporarily,” Nagpure said.
The stranded traffic is being managed amid restoration work at the Tharad area of Udhampur.
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway suffered damages at several locations between Lakhanpur, Madhopur, and Jammu, and Udhampur and Banihal on August 26.
The highway was partially opened for stranded traffic on August 31.
It again got blocked on September 2 following torrential rains between Udhampur and Banihal sectors, especially at the Tharad area of Udhampur, where a massive landslide hit and damaged the road.
Till the filing of this report, stranded vehicles carrying essential supplies like vegetables, poultry, petroleum oil, and LPG cylinders were being allowed to ply on a rotational basis on the 250-metre unpaved road stretch at Tharad village in Udhampur. (curtesy for greater Kashmir )
