International Women's Day being celebrated today

International Women's Day is being celebrated today. The day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year to help forge a gender equal world, celebrate women's achievements and their increasing visibility in every sphere of life.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime MInister Narendra Modi has paid his tribute to the achievements of the country's Nari Shakti.

In a tweet, Mr Modi emphasised on Nari Shakti for New India and said that the country greatly cherish the role of women in its progress. He reiterated that the government will keep working to further women empowerment.

This day celebrates the cultural, political, economic and social achievements of women. It also highlights the extraordinary roles played by women in almost every walk of life and celebrates acts of courage and determination by ordinary women.

United Nations Observance of International Women's Day, under the theme “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”, recognizes and celebrates the women and girls who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education.

Meanwhile, Women are playing a major role in fast moving Mumbai City. All women employees are operating 2 metro and 1 local station in the city.

AIR correspondent reports, Akurli Metro Station on Metro line 2A and Eksar Metro Station on Metro line 7 have become the icons of women power as the whole operations of these two stations are being managed by 76 women employees, from station managers to security guards.

The all-women staff at Akurli and Eksar stations are working in 3 shifts, including Station Controller, Excess Fare officer and Ticket Sales Officers, Shift Supervisors, Customer Service Officers etc.

Officials are assisting Metro commuters, while security and sanitation staff is ensuring safety and a clean environment at Metro stations.

Mumbai Metro has around 27% female staff which is about 958 female employees who are handling different responsibilities in the fields like Maintenance, HR, Finance, and admin department efficiently.

Matunga station on Central Railway in Mumbai had initiated this concept in 2017 and entered Limca Book of records in 2018.

This initiative will not only highlight the potential of women in the transport industry but will also inspire other women to pursue a career in this sector.
