Pakistan's attempts at cornering India on Kashmir issue at the United Nations failed miserably yesterday when most of the permanent members of United Nations Security Council backed India at an informal closed door meeting.
India categorically told the international community that its move to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution revoking the special status to Jammu and Kashmir was an internal matter.
The informal meeting of UNSC was requested by China to discuss revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting took place behind closed doors with only the five permanent members and the 10 non-permanent members attending it.
Only China favours Pakistan and the other permanent UNSC members - Britain, France, Russia and the US - want the Kashmir issue to be addressed bilaterally.
India has expressed gratification that the informal meeting of the UN Security Council appreciated and acknowledged the Indian government's recent decisions to ensure good governance and socio economic development in Jammu and Kashmir.
Briefing media after the meeting, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin said India's position was and remains that matters related to Article 370 of the Constitution are entirely an internal matter of India and these have no external ramifications. Without naming Pakistan, he said there are some who are trying to project an "alarmist approach" to the situation in Kashmir, which is far from the ground realities. He stated that terror should stop so that talks can start.
Mr Akbaruddin asserted that there are normal diplomatic ways when countries deal with each other but using terror to thrive and push goals is not the way that normal states behave. He stressed that no democracy will acknowledge or accept talks when terror thrives.
He added that the recent decisions taken by the Indian government and its legislative bodies are intended to ensure that good governance is promoted and that socio-economic development is enhanced for people in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He further said that authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have announced a whole set of measures to move towards normalcy.
Mr Akbaruddin said the measures that the Indian government took following the revocation of Article 370 were preventive in nature. He said they were designed to stop terrorists from bleeding the people and there have been no casualties or fatalities in 10 days. He added that India is committed to gradually removing all restrictions in Kashmir. | | | | |
