| US, China to resume talks to resolve trade disputes | | | | Washington 09 November(Agencies)
The United States and China are to resume talks today after months of spiralling tension in a bid to resolve their trade disputes.
News agency AFP reports that today's delayed meeting in Washington comes weeks before US President Donald Trump is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinpingon the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Argentina.
It may be recalled that President Trump had slapped $250 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese goods, accusing Beijing of nefarious trading practices, prompting retaliatory measures. In today's meeting Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and two high-ranking Chinese policymakers are also likely to discuss steps to reduce military friction between the two countries.
A planned trip by Mattis to Beijing last month was cancelled amid rising military tensions between the Pacific powers. But China's defence minister, General Wei Fenghe is visiting the Pentagon to a ceremonial honour cordon today. | | | | |
