Funeral procession of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee begins

The funeral procession of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has begun from BJP headquarters in New Delhi. His last rites will be performed at Smriti Sthal this evening.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president Amit Shah and other party leaders paid tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at BJP headquarters this morning. Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee's body was brought to the party Headquarters from his residence earlier today.

Politicians cutting across party lines paid their last respects to the departed leader.
King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and Sri Lanka's acting Foreign Minister Lakshman Kiriella were among those who paid their respects.
Since last evening, the body was kept at Vajpayee's official residence at Krishna Menon Marg, where people from all walks of life paid homage to the departed leader including governors and chief ministers of many states, three services chief, leaders of political parties, RSS chief and renowned personalities.

AIR correspondent reports, anticipating heavy footfall during the final journey, central Delhi has been put under tight security. More than 20,000 security personnel have been deployed to facilitate crowd movement during the funeral procession.

The procession will pass through Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Delhi Gate, Netaji Subhash Marg and Shanti Van to reach Rashtriya Smriti Samadhi area where the BJP leader will be cremated.
